Interconnects: Will 2014 Be The Year You Transform Your Business?

2013 was a year of change in the world of business communications. The work (and the conversation around the work) on WebRTC gained traction, SIP Trunking rose in popularity, and the subscription mindset took hold among small and medium-sized businesses.

The advances in technology, and customer acceptance of new ways of doing business, have created a unique intersection for cloud communications providers. We are at an inflection point in the history of business communications, and that means this is an important moment for Interconnects.

Which way will you take your business? Will you move forward and embrace cloud-based opportunities, or will you continue to do what has historically driven success for your company? This is obviously a difficult question for an Interconnect owner to answer – the obvious answer is that you want to embrace the future, but that isn’t always easy to do when you’re the one with your boots on the ground. When an Interconnect has established itself by conducting business a certain way, changing course can seem foolhardy. On the other hand, changing course could be the pathway to greater opportunity.

Are you being disciplined, or are you being stubborn? There’s a fine line between the two.

While there are still cloud communications naysayers out there, it can be helpful to flip the thought process around. Specifically, it’s instructive to ask whether it’s possible that cloud communications won’t continue to grow in popularity. Is it possible that the businesses that have moved to the cloud will be dissatisfied with what it does for their business? And the answer is: of course it’s possible.

However, it seems unlikely.

SMBs are moving to the cloud with increasing pace, and once they’re there are realizing significant advantages over their competitors. Cloud-based unified communications enables them to embrace mobility, unite data streams and move with more agility in order to better serve their customers and win business.

Of course, the key word in the headline is “transform.” Moving an Interconnect from an established model of success and embracing a new way of serving customers in order to realize upside is not necessarily easy. It’s important to identify a clear path forward, and to find a reliable partner to act as a guide into this brave new world. Interconnects should look for a partner with a robust platform, a well-considered training program and a proven track record of success.
